There are two types of qualifying standards for state.
Automatic
The first type of qualifying standard is the automatic qualifying standard. It is pretty much what it sounds like. If you achieve this standard at one of the 4 invitational meets we compete at during the season you are guaranteed a spot on our state team at the state meet. You can only qualify at the invitationals so achieving this standard at a regular meet, while very impressive, does not qualify you for state.
Provisional
The second type of qualifying standard is the provisional. Like the automatic this standard must be met at one of the 4 invitational meets during the season. Unlike the automatic this does not guarantee you a spot on the state team at the state meet. Each event at state has a set number of entries (40 for individual events and 30 for relays). Once the athletes who have achieved the automatic standard are entered into the meet the remaining spots are then filled with the fastest provisional athletes until the cap is met. If the combined total of automatic and provisional times/scores is less that 40 (30 for relays) then that event DOES NOT get filled and will be seeded accordingly, meaning even if you have the 40th best time/score in Division 3 for a particular event, if that time/score does not meet the provisional standard you will NOT compete at state.
